    Get a Domain Name

This will be the only purchase you’ll need to make; buying a domain, i.e. web-dev.org.

With my experience with domain registrars, I can tell you not to sign up with GoDaddy, you can read more about it here, http://forums.nodaddy.com/index.php. I am going to save you a lot of frustration, by choosing other accredited registrars, like http://www.domaindiscount24.net/, or http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domains/. Do not buy anything other than a domain, if it ask you for hosting, email, etc.. scratch it all. You don’t need these services, because you will be running your own server.

In this tutorial you will purchase a domain from Domaindiscount24.net (also known as Key-Systems GmbH). After your domain purchase, log in to your control panel at domaindiscount24.net.

    • Select ‘Domain Admin’ in the left menu
    • Double click on your domain name and fill in info with the following.
    • Forwarding/ Own Page - Make sure the ‘Forwarding to an external Website/URL’ radio button selected. Leave the input box blank.
    • Email-Forwarding - You can optionally set some email forwardings.
    • IP-address (IN A) - Input your static IP address.
    • Mailserver (IN MX); Service record (IN SRV); Nameserver (IN NS); and Place for comments (IN TXT), you can all leave blank for this tutorial.
    • Save it and select ‘Domain Admin’ in the left menu, again.
    • Double click on your domain’s WHOIS.
    • Fill in contact info in the green, hit execute in the green- write down the number they give you.
    • Now, input this number into owner-Contact:, admin-Contact:, tech-Contact:, and billing-Contact: and hit execute below these configs after selecting ‘I confirm that I have read and understood the conditions of the corresponding trustee agreements.’
    • Verify information and logout.

    Quick Summary:

What you have done here is bought your own domain, from an accredited registrar- domaindiscount24.net. Told the world, that your Static IP at home resolves to your domain name- IP-address (IN A). And you have told the world, how they can contact the owner of this domain- whois.

It’s crucial that the info in the whois be correct and current. For privacy you don’t have to put your name, instead you could input- Internet Director. The mailing address has to be a legitimate address; you can use a PO Box. The Phone numbers and email have to work and be answerable; you can use any google email account and a valid phone number.
